I was surprised Sunday morning when I woke up and and grabbed my phone from the nightstand.
I knew it would update to iOS 11.3 while I slept. However, I never expected the message from Apple that came with it.
The focus was Data & Privacy, and Apple was saying how great it is at protecting mine.
The message ended by saying this: "Apple believes privacy is a fundamental human right, so every Apple product is designed to minimize the collection and use of your data, use on-device processing whenever possible, and provide transparency and control over your information."
Of course, what I thought of next was Apple's CEO Tim Cook, who was asked how he would handle things if Apple was in Facebook's situation. He replied that he'd never be in that situation because Apple does not operate like Facebook. Instead, just as my iPhone update told me, "Apple believes privacy is a fundamental human right."
Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg responded to Cook's comments in a thought provoking way. And as this privacy debate rages on, one of Apple's co-founders deactivated his Facebook page.
Now the focus will be on Facebook this week, as Zuckerberg testifies before Congress.
On a side note, be wary of upgrading your organization's users to iOS 11.3 because the update may have messed up mobile device management. See this Forbes article for more on the MDM issue.
