Just a few days after Air Canada announced the hack of its mobile app, British Airways has issued a statement about data stolen from the airline and its customers:

"We are investigating the theft of customer data from our website and our mobile app between 21st August and 5th September as a matter of urgency."

British Airways hack, what was taken:

     • Names
     • Addresses
     • All bank card details

Airline promises to pay for fraud

The British Airways breach announcement promises to pay for any fraud that stems from the hack:

"No customer will be out of pocket as a direct result of the criminal theft of data from ba.com and the airline’s mobile app."

How did the British Airways hack happen?

It remains a bit of a mystery as to what, exactly, happened in the British Airways breach. All we know for sure is what the company's CEO Alex Cruz told BBC radio:

“There were other methods, very sophisticated efforts, by criminals in obtaining the data. It was having access to our systems in an illicit way, it was very sophisticated.”

Was this web and app hack related to the app hack at Air Canada? Was it the same methodology?

We will see.
