The 'Justice League' in Cyberspace

They are a volunteer group of more than 1,000 cybersecurity professionals, united by a common purpose.

They will defend and stop cyberattacks against medical facilities during the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Since the coronavirus came out, I started to notice more and more hackers use this crisis to gain profit, and it made me so mad. It made me so angry because this is a game changer. This is not the time to attack. People can lose their life with all this activity.

So if someone is crazy enough and sick enough to use this coronavirus crisis to leverage it, to gain some profit, he needs to know that we are here to stop him. We are here to fight back. And I think that most of the people that joined our league, they have that emotion."

That's Ohad Zaidenberg, the group's founder.

On social media, some have called his group the Justice League in cyberspace. However, its real name is the COVID-19 CTI League. CTI stands for cyber threat intelligence.

What is the COVID-19 CTI League?

The group has only been in existence for a couple of weeks now, and they claim to offer 24x7 support for security threats against hospitals, doctors and nurses, and the medical profession.

"First, this community is a community of goodwill, while all the countries close the borders and say this globalization process is over. Secondly, we go the opposite basically, because we are united. We are all together in this project.

We have more than 69 countries involved in 22 different time zones. Twenty four-seven (24x7), people will be awake to help the medical sector, no matter where, no matter what the political situation in the country, we are here to help globally.

So this is something that they find really amazing. Who wants to watch the watchers [the medical industry]? So we are the people that are watching the medical sector. They are fighters now in this war, so we are able to protect them."

How COVID-19 CTI League helps with medical industry cyberattacks

These cyber superheroes say they will help with triage in a live attack, help organizations navigate a rapid escalation to law enforcement if needed, and can fast-track malicious website takedowns to remove ongoing cyberattacks.

"It means that we can remove any website, any web page, or any file from the internet. We have a bunch of people that are waiting to receive in all the requests and to help us to clear the internet and all the cyber domain from these threats. We can do today to make high priority indicator that we want to people to get notice about it and to block it."

Is the COVID-19 CTI League similar to the Justice League?

Is this group the Justice League in cyberspace? Founder Ohad Zaidenberg likes the comparison but says it's not quite accurate:

"There is one member in the Justice League that decided that he had enough and cannot stand with all the criminals and their missions in the streets. He wants to take control and start to fight back. This is Batman. But unlike Batman, we are not superheroes. We are just people that care."
