It's been known to happen, but there is no typo in the headline for this story.
A credential stealing app in the Google Play store has you defending "Mr. President Rump" (no 'T') as his bodyguard.
Kaspersky Lab discovered the app, which has been downloaded more than one million times:
Kaspersky says this app, and more than 80 others that are less popular, have been stealing credentials for use on a Russian social media site, and in some cases, secretly adding people to online groups, making them seem bigger and more popular than they actually are.
And this has been going on for awhile now.
Says Kaspersky: "Most of these apps were uploaded to Google Play in October 2017, but several of them were uploaded in July 2017, so they were being distributed for as long as three months. Moreover, the most popular app was initially uploaded to the Google Play Store on March 2017, but without any malicious codeāit was just a game. Cybercriminals updated this app with a malicious version only in October 2017, having waited more than seven months to do so."
The company says it alerted Google about the apps, and they have since been removed from the Google Play store.
