We just came across a good read on the apparent surge of students using college and university networks for cryptomining.
This is especially attractive if electricity is included in students' room and board costs because it suddenly seems like cryptomining is getting your (digital) money for nothing.
The EdScoop article includes a quote from Stanford CISO Michael Duff:
“Cryptocurrency mining is most lucrative when computing costs are minimized, which unfortunately has led to compromised systems, misused university computing equipment, and personally owned mining devices using campus power,” Duff wrote.
