Cybercriminals 'Go Free from Prosecution'

I'm just back from the SecureWorld Bay Area cybersecurity conference.

The collaboration there among information security leaders was fantastic.

This collaboration is more necessary than ever as cyber criminals appear to be increasingly outrunning law enforcement.

More evidence of this comes from a The Times of London, in an article titled "Hackers go free from prosecution."

The paper focused on UK law firm RPC and the its analysis of prosecution against cybercriminals. The numbers are downright frustrating.

UK cyber attacks rising, cyber prosecutions declining

  • 2015: 61 cybercrime cases prosecuted
  • 2016: 57 cybercrime cases prosecuted
  • 2017: 47 cybercrime cases prosecuted

Richard Breavington, a partner at RPC, told The Times:

“Police forces are doing their best with the resources they have but the scale of the problem means businesses cannot necessarily rely on the police to really help them when there is a cybercrime.”

We must push back against this trend through industry collaboration.
