Shoppers at Saks 5th Avenue and Lord & Taylor stores like to look good and will spend the money to do it.

But let's see how they react to having their high-end credit card data stolen as more and more of their digits are for sale on the web.

Hudson's Bay, the parent company, confirmed the breach, which appears to be limited to in-store purchases:

"We recently became aware of a data security issue involving customer payment card data at certain Saks Fifth Avenue, Saks OFF 5TH, and Lord & Taylor stores in North America. We identified the issue, took steps to contain it, and believe it no longer poses a risk to customers shopping at our stores.  While the investigation is ongoing, there is no indication that this affects our e-commerce or other digital platforms, Hudson’s Bay, Home Outfitters, or HBC Europe."

The breach was first reported by Gemini after it discovered a batch of card numbers for sale on the web.

Says Reuters: "JokerStash, which sells stolen data on the criminal underground, on Wednesday said that it planned to release more than 5 million stolen credit cards, according to Gemini Chief Technology Officer Dmitry Chorine."

The hacking group has so far released about 125,000 payment cards from the stores.

At this point, Hudson's Bay says it does not believe Social Security numbers were taken in the breach.
