European authorities announced today they've taken down the network that was selling the Luminosity Link RAT to bad actors around the world.

This particular remote access trojan (RAT) would do the following, according to a Europol report: "Once installed upon a victim’s computer, a user of the Luminosity Link RAT was free to access and view documents, photographs and other files, record all the keystrokes entered and even activate the webcam on the victim’s computer—all of which could be done without the victim’s knowledge."

And the investigation revealed what we hear from those in InfoSec all the time: You no longer need much knowledge to implement these hacking tools, which makes them very attractive.

Investigators found the Luminosity RAT was sold for as little as 40 Euros, sold 8,600 times, and in use across 78 countries.

"Victims are believed to be in the thousands, with investigators having already identified evidence of stolen personal details, passwords, private photographs, video footage, and data. Forensic analysis on the large number of computers and internet accounts seized continues."

It is amazing how much damage a single RAT can do.
