Physical Security and Cybersecurity: Russian Spies Prove They Are Linked

One thing we often overhear at SecureWorld is that cybersecurity and physical security are increasingly joined at the hip.

And the arrest of two Russian spies in the Netherland's earlier this year has revealed more evidence that this is true.

The Times of London has an intriguing write up on these Russian spies, who were headed to Switzerland and a chemical agent testing lab, called Spiez:

"They were equipped with hacking equipment which would have been able to break into the computer network of the laboratory, the country’s institute working on protection against nuclear, biological and chemical threats.

At the time of the arrest, Spiez was investigating poison gas attacks by the Assad regime in Syria and the attack on Sergei Skripal and his daughter in Salisbury."

That's right, the lab the spies were attempting to hack was doing the chemical analysis on the poison attack against Sergei Skripal, 66, and his 33-year-old daughter Yulia.

They were found unconscious in a shopping mall about 90 minutes from London.

Once again, we see evidence of the intersection between physical security and cybersecurity.
