Apple grabs the headlines, but the world apparently loves Android.

It has more than 85% of the mobile device marketshare.

And based on what security researchers are seeing now on the dark web, exploits against Android including ransomware, are about to become much more prevalent.

Average price of Android exploit kit

Researchers at Carbon Black say the stage is set for android devices and mobile phones to be significantly attacked in 2018:

"We are already seeing an uptick in Android Ransomware kits in underground markets, selling for a much higher price. In our research, we discovered that the median price of ransomware targeting Windows OS is $10, whereas Android-capable ransomware has a median range of $200."

The return on investment could be enourmous if bad actors use one of these kits in a sucessful campaign. The fake WhatsApp was downloaded more than a million times in 2017 before being discovered on the Apple Play store.

"...we are noticing premium kits targeting Android and believe these attacks will come to smartphones, tablets and other Android devices very soon."
