First it was Facebook on the hot seat for Russian backed advertising, then it was Twitter.

Now Twitter says it's taking immediate action against two specific and known Russian backed advertisers on the platform:

"Twitter has made the policy decision to off-board advertising from all accounts owned by Russia Today (RT) and Sputnik, effective immediately," the company said this morning.

Twitter says this is based on retrospective work the company has done since the 2016 U.S. Presidential Election.

The U.S. Intelligence Community issued a recent report with evidence that both Sputnik and Russia Today attempted to interfere with the election. The report even notes that Russia Today changed its name to "RT" some time ago so Americans who might be suspicious of a Russian backed news source might no longer make that connection.

However, Twitter stopped short of shutting the accounts down.

"RT and Sputnik may remain organic users on our platform, in accordance with the Twitter Rules."
