Needless to say, having an unsecured database probably wasn't the best choice for this hotel chain.

Choice Hotels exposed guest records that included names, addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses.

A security researcher found a 3.8 GB MongoDB database containing 5.7 million records that he traced back to the company.

Bank Info Security covered the details:

Choice Hotels says about 700,000 guest records were exposed after one of its vendors copied data from its systems.

Fraudsters discovered the unsecured database and tried to hold the hotel chain to ransom, which it ignored.

The hotel company tells ISMG the ransom attempt was "not successful."
