In a historic moment for the U.S. Marine Corps and the field of cybersecurity, Major General Lorna M. Mahlock has assumed command of the Cyber National Mission Force (CNMF). The appointment not only marks a significant milestone in the military's leadership but also underscores the increasing importance of cyber capabilities in national defense.

A trailblazer in cybersecurity: Maj. Gen. Lorna Mahlock

Maj. Gen. Lorna Mahlock is no stranger to breaking barriers. As the first African-American woman to achieve the rank of Marine Corps brigadier general in 2018, she has continued to make strides in her military career. With a background in communications, she brings a wealth of experience to her new role at the helm of the Cyber National Mission Force.

The Cyber National Mission Force: defending the digital realm

The Cyber National Mission Force (CNMF) is a crucial component of U.S. Cyber Command, responsible for defending the nation against cyber threats from foreign adversaries. Its mission includes detecting, preventing, and responding to cyber incidents that could jeopardize national security. The CNMF plays a pivotal role in maintaining the resilience of critical infrastructure and safeguarding sensitive information.

"CNMF has always been the 'go-to' force when our nation has a challenge in the cyber domain," Army Gen. Paul Nakasone, the CYBERCOM and National Security Agency boss, said in a statement. "These joint cyber operators are a powerhouse that punch above their weight against some of the world's most reckless and determined foreign malicious cyber actors."

Maj. Gen. Mahlock succeeded Army Maj. Gen. William Hartman at the helm of the CNMF during a ceremony January 5. Hartman, who led the force since 2019, is taking another post as Cyber Command's deputy chief.

Nakasone presided over the change of command on January 5.

In her new role, Maj. Gen. Mahlock is poised to lead the CNMF with a vision that combines military strategy, technological innovation, and a commitment to adaptability in the face of emerging cyber threats. Her leadership is expected to reinforce the force's capabilities and contribute to the development of cutting-edge cybersecurity strategies.

One of the key elements of Maj. Gen. Mahlock's approach is fostering collaborative partnerships. Cybersecurity is a collective effort that involves coordination across military branches, government agencies, and private-sector entities. By strengthening these partnerships, the CNMF aims to create a more robust and interconnected defense against cyber adversaries.

Adapting to evolving threats

The cyber landscape is dynamic, with threats constantly evolving in complexity and sophistication. Maj. Gen. Mahlock recognizes the need for agility and continuous adaptation to stay ahead of cyber adversaries. Her leadership will likely involve investing in training, technology, and strategic initiatives to ensure the CNMF remains at the forefront of cyber defense.

Maj. Gen. Mahlock's appointment has received widespread recognition and support from military leaders, cybersecurity experts, and advocates of diversity and inclusion. Her ascent to such a critical role signifies not only personal achievement but also a broader commitment to diversity in leadership roles within the U.S. military.
